Snacking can be one of the hardest lifestyle changes to make when making healthier choices, but from doing a bit of research and making some tweaks myself I have a list of my top 5 favourite healthy snack options
Hummus and Baby Carrots
I prefer roasted red pepper hummus but one can use any type of hummus or other dip depending on your personal taste. You do not have to eat baby carrots, you can choose any vegetable that you like or prefer or you can have an assortment of vegetables to keep things interesting. This satisfies my cravings for something crunchy such as chips or crackers.
Chia Pudding with Walnuts and Dark Chocolate
All that is needed for chia pudding is some type of milk (I drink almond milk because I am lactose intolerant), vanilla extract and chia seeds. You can add honey to sweeten but that depends on your preference. In regards to toppings for chia pudding again this is subjective to your likes and tastes. I always have walnuts on hand and I love the combination of dark chocolate because it satisfies my cravings for a chocolate bar.
Nuts and seeds are a great snack option but there are certain rules to follow such as get natural, and unsalted kinds as they are the best for you. I buy my nuts and seeds from Bulk Barn as well because they have unsalted options for all the nuts and seeds they do carry. My favourite nuts/ seeds are sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. A handful of natural, unsalted almonds and a nice big glass of water and you are full and would have never thought otherwise.
Although I usually eat this for breakfast I make a smaller portion when I feel for a snack. In order to make a parfait i use fruits, granola, yogurt and i top it off with chia seeds or flax seeds and a drizzle of honey. I usually use blueberries, blackberries and bananas in my parfait but from time to time I add raspberries, cherries, pears and even apples. I prefer plain or greek yogurt but use what flavour you fancy. In regards to granola I buy no sweetened granola from Bulk Barn because they have granola not full of sugars and artificial flavours, as well as they have flavour combinations you won’t find in every day grocery stores.
You can never go wrong with a nice fruit salad for a snack. The great thing about a simple fruit salad is you can put whatever fruits you want together. You can also make a ‘dressing’ depending on the fruits you combine. I love a fruit salad with watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, pineapples and strawberries without any dressing. Its very refreshing and having the right portion will leave you feeling full as well as satisfied.
